Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition which causes patients to subconsciously perform receptive behaviors (compulsions) and have frequent unwanted thoughts (obsessions). These repetitive compulsions and obsessions can make it difficult for patients to live normal lives, particularly when it comes to social interactions and personal relationships.
Everyone experiences an occasional compulsion or obsession. The behavior becomes Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder when those behaviors occur so frequently that they start to take over your life. In people with OCD, these compulsive behaviors can occupy hours of their day with repetitive tasks.
It can be hard to diagnose OCD. Many of the symptoms of OCD are similar to those of other mental health disorders, including Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), anxiety, depression and schizophrenia. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can also occur in tandem with other mental health issues.
Although OCD and OCPD sound similar, they are different conditions. OCPD is a personality disorder that causes an intense pre-occupation with perfection, organization and control. People with OCD are usually aware of the abnormality of their behaviors. People with OCPD don’t generally see any issues with their behaviors and beliefs.
