LGBTQIA+ is a relatively new term that is inclusive of many non cisgendered (gender and/or expression aligns with sex assigned at birth) and heterosexual (attracted to the opposite sex) groups. It stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Ally, and other. The “A” can also refer to Asexual individuals.
LGBTQIA+ can many challenges in life, both at home and in public, including coming out, homophobia, transphobia, discrimination and alienation. People can also face specific difficulties and issues based on what subgroup the person identifies with. Someone who is Transgender, for example, can face significant issues of gender identity. These are issues that are less common with someone who is Gay.
